Wheat procurement drive to continue till achieving target: Passco MD
Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco) Managing Director Major General Sohail Shafqat has said that wheat procurement drive will continue till achieving the procurement target of two million tons assigned by the government. He said a transparent system had been evolved to provide maximum benefit to the small growers besides special monitoring teams had also been constituted to immediately resolve any complaint or difficulties being faced by the growers in selling its produce to the Corporation.
These views were expressed by him while inaugurating the ‘wheat procurement drive 2012′ at Iqbal Nagar near Hafiz Abad on Tuesday.DCO Hafiz Abad Captain Muhammad Asif (Retd), Passco General Manager (Fields) Colonel Tanveer Hussein (Retd) and a large number of growers attended the ceremony.
Passco Managing Director claimed that 50 percent of the procurement target would be achieved in first 15 days of the procurement drive. He said the Corporation had also reduced the price of gunny bags and now it would be given to the growers at Rs 115 per bag instead of Rs 120 per bag.
This decision would provide relief to the small growers, he hoped.
He said that token system had been introduced under the wheat procurement policy of the current year to ensure transparency, while revenue officers of the areas concerned would be consulted to discourage middle men and encourage the real growers for procurement of wheat.Sohail Shafqat further stated that gunny bags would be distributed on all seven days instead of three days of the week to reduce the hardships of the growers.
He said growers could contact him directly in case of any complaint.
He said objective behind issuance of only eight gunny bags per acre was to accommodate maximum growers and provide them the benefit of government announced support price. He said 222 procurement centres of the corporation had been set up while all the arrangements with regard to procurement and payment to growers were completed.
He claimed that growers with less than 12 acres of land were being given preference in issuance of gunny bags.
DCO Hafiz Abad Captain (Retd) Muhammad Asif and Passco Zonal Head Hafiz Abad Colonel (Retd) Muhammad Sarwar also spoke on this occasion.
