The role of mobile in driving efficiency and sustainability: Connected Agriculture
by Sofia Flota
The role of mobile in driving efficiency and sustainability in the food and agriculture value chain.
In 2011, Vodafone commissioned a report to identify different opportunities for mobiles to address productivity and sustainability challenges in agriculture, and also how technology can help emerging markets playing a critical role in feeding a growing population.
The report focuses in 4 categories of solutions:
+ Increasing access and affordability of financial services tailored for agricultural purposes
+ Delivering information relevant to farmers, such as agricultural techniques, commodity prices and weather forecasts, where traditional methods of communication are limited
+ Optimizing supply chain management across the sector, and delivering efficiency improvements for transportation logistics
+ Enhancing the link between commodity exchanges, traders, buyers and sellers of agricultural produce
“The potential multiplier effects of the social and economic benefits that these opportunities could deliver will reach well beyond the immediate value chain”
This report present their findings and their recommendations for Mobile network operators, key stakeholders, NGOs, private enterprises and governments to contribute with their knowledge and expertise.
