Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif presided over a high-level meeting, here on Wednesday, which reviewed the progress towards achievement of the targets of agriculture development fixed under development strategy 2018.
The meeting decided to hold an agriculture conference for devising an effective agri development strategy besides gave approval to various steps for the development of agriculture and increase in per acre production.
Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz Sharif said there was a need to move effectively on development strategy 2018. He said agriculture, livestock and dairy farming were closely linked and development of those sectors could help in resolving problems such as poverty and unemployment.
He said time had come to take practical measures for the promotion of agriculture, livestock and dairy farming, adding that per acre yield could be increased through provision of agri machinery and other agri implements to cultivators at subsidised rates. He said there was a need to make investment in the purchase of agri machinery for increasing productive capacity and promotion of modern agri farming.
The Chief Minister said internship of students of agri universities on agri farms was a splendid programme and a number of such students should be increased. He said the system of agri marketing should be modernised for safeguarding the interest of cultivators while the programme of kitchen gardening should be furthered in an effective manner. He said effective steps should be taken for strengthening of agri sector and small cultivators, adding there was a need for reformation of seed sector for improvement of seed technology.
He said agri research institutions should take meaningful measures for the promotion of agri research and effective weather and pest warning system should be evolved for increasing agriculture production. He said agriculture department would have to adopt an effective strategy, adding that time had come to evolve an effective strategy in consultation with agri experts and cultivators and ensure its speedy implementation.
