Sindh Govt, Czech Company inks MoU for wind farm

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah said that Sindh is first province to take lead in power generation through wind and it has the potential of generating 50000 MW through this renewable soure in the coastal belt of the province.

Sindh Government has signed a MoU with Wikov Wind AS, a Czech Republic company for the power generation of 50 MW at the wind corridor in Gharo Jhimpir Distt Thatta.

The MoU was inked by DG Sindh Board of Investment Muhammad Ziauddin and Czech company’s head Martin Wichterle in the presence of CM Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, said a statement issued here on Wednesday.

Sindh Minister for Finance Syed Murad Ali Shah and Minister for Information Sharjeel Enam Memon and others were also present. A high level investment delegation from Czech Republic also witnessed the ceremony.

Addressing the ceremony Sindh CM said that Sindh is blessed with natural resources like wind and coal which can not only fulfill the energy requirements of Sindh but also whole country. Sindh is gifted with huge wind corridor which will be exploited for the energy and power generation, he added.

He said that Sindh is first province to take lead in power generation through wind and it has the potential of generating 50000 MW of power through wind in coastal belt of the province.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that previous governments didn’t generate even a single MW of electricity and it was PPP government under Shaheed Mohtarma Benzair Bhutto which initiated power generation projects in Badin but unfortunately this important project was shelved by Nawaz Sharif government.

If that project had not been abandoned the country would not have been facing energy crises these days, he added.

He said that generating power through wind is novel idea and this credit goes to President Asif Ali Zardari who has taken keen interest and has always supported the initiatives of Provincial government for the betterment of people.

The CM said that investment friendly polices of Sindh government are attracting more and more foreign investment in the province, which also reflects the confidence of inventors on the governments initiatives.

Later talking to Media persons the CM Sindh informed that a foreign company wants to invest in Power generation through Coal in Badin district.

Sindh Minister for Finance Syed Murad Ali Shah while briefing about the details of the MoU said that Sindh government will execute the project and arrange the funds while Czech company will provide the required material, machinery and technology.

He added that financing for the 50 MW project will be arranged before the 31st of December this year while construction will start in January 2013.

Czech Republic delegation head Martin Wichterle said that it was a great opportunity for then to invest in power generation through wind and we will bring more business for local industry.

He added that Czech Republic wants to enhance the business and investments opportunities in Pak and many other power generation projects are under consideration.

The projects will help in resolving the energy crises faced by Pakistan and bilateral cooperation in the field of trade business and investment will also get boost.

Martin Whichterle, Chairman of the Board, Wikov Wind informed that the company is the subsidiary of Wikov holdings of Czech Republic specialized in all kind mechanical equipment.

Wikov Wind is specialized in wind turbine technology development, wind turbine main component assembly, development process, construction of wind turbines and wind turbine monitoring, service and maintenance.

He appreciated the efforts of Government of Sindh to facilitate foreign investors in all sectors of economy.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Chief Security Sindh Raja Muhammad Abbas, Additional Chief Security Finance Aijaz Ali Khan, Additional Secretary (P&D) Malik Israr, Secretary information Kazi Shahid Pervaiz , Czech Repulic company representatives Jidrich Prokopee and others.
