ISLAMABAD: The government gives special focus to Balochistan agriculture development to reduce poverty in the region and to improve socio-economic condition of farming community.
This was stated by Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan at the concluding ceremony of ‘3rd Batch of Skill Development of the Farmers and Scientist from Balochistan’ held at National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), Islamabad.
The minister assured the farmers the government would not allow any import of fruits and vegetables from neighboring countries as long as local commodities are available in the market. “As long as your fruits and vegetables are available in the market, we will not allow import from our neighboring countries,” he assured the farmers. He said that interest of farmers was government’s priority.
Highlighting the importance of water availability, the minister said development of water reservoirs and dams in Balochistan was need of the hour, however, he said after 18th amendment, the resources have been transferred to provinces so they need to take measures to share resources with federal to build such facilities.
He said special steps would be initiated to install solar tube-wells in the provinces under the prime minister’s scheme to facilitate the farmers. “There is need of awareness among farmers as unnecessary and over use of water resources has caused water problem in some regions,” he highlighted.
He said the government would provide interest-free loans to farmers for installation of solar tube-wells for agriculture use. The minister, while emphasising the need for providing training to farmers, said that the government aims to train as many as 1,000 Balochistan small farmers through the ongoing programme initiated by the NARC.
