KARACHI: The mango experts in February introduced a new variety of mango in the experimental mango area of Sindh Horticulture Research Institute, Mirpurkhas.
The local administration of Mirpurkhas was reluctant to disclose it owing to the pressure and fear of political personalities, feudal lords and landlords.
They fear that the monopoly of landlords and big growers would be challenged, as the fruit would be available in almost half of the year besides they would suffer financial loss due to advance fruit’s influx in the market.
Reliable sources have said that the agriculture scientists and researchers had planted a new variety of mango, which was acquired from Australia, and grafted its plants on experimental basis in experimental mango area of the institute while efforts were made to get mango harvest in February every year from this variety.
However, the researchers had succeeded to get mango from few plants in February but did not disclose the research’s result officially.
One of the official of the institute on promise of anonymity said that it was a big success to acquire mango in cold season while only some officers and experts were aware about this success and kept it a secret in fear of political pressure for getting this variety of mango, which was currently in a small quantity.
When contacted Sindh Horticulture Research Institute Director Ashraf Ali, he refused to give any information about the new variety of mango but admitted about the success of agriculture experts and researchers.
