ISLAMABAD: An eight-member delegation from Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC), led by Korean National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (KCID) Chairman Lee Bonghoon, visited the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) for cooperation in agriculture sector and rural development.
Other members of the delegation included International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) Vice President Park Tae Seon, KRC Director General Bang Sung Soo and SB Super Soybeans Technology Director Shen Yang HaoHao, said a statement issued on Sunday.
Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Chairman DrNadeem Amjad, while presiding over a meeting with the Korean delegation, said that PARC was the apex agricultural organisation at national level, which was coordinating agricultural research activities in Pakistan with the provinces and international organisations. He highlighted the main fields of research including plant sciences, natural resources, animal sciences, agricultural engineering, social sciences and coordination.
Monitoring and Evaluation Cell (PRMC) Senior Director Planning Dr Pervaiz Khaliq said there are 401 scientists including 120 PhDs, over 19 research institutes, number of research labs, focusing over 96 disciplines of agriculture.
He also explained the achievements of NARC in development of new crops varieties and hybrids in wheat, maize, rice, sunflower, canola, pulses (mung, mash and masoor), soybean, sugarcane, horticultural crops, kitchen gardening programme, new farm machineries and other technologies commercialised in various fields of agriculture.
PARC Plant Sciences member Dr Ahmad Bakhsh Mahar highlighted the story of promotion of cultivation of soybean at NARC and its production technology.
He said soybean was the need of our country as large quantity of soybean is being imported in Pakistan for solvent and poultry industry.
The delegation visited field experimental area of Department of Horticultural Research and Development (DHRD), Silage Production Plant for small farmers, cow and buffalo sheds, National Institute of Genomics and Advanced Biotechnology (NIGAB) and Plant Genetic Research Institute (PGRI- Gene Bank).
Later, the PARC chairman and KRC Korea director general signed minutes of discussion (MoD) for cooperation between both organisations in manufacturing of high efficiency irrigation system for ground and flood water management, developing Korean Technology Park in NARC, Korean assistance in developing small dams in Pakistan, soybean and strawberry production technologies, sharing Korean Agricultural Policy experience, cooperation for manufacturing small and medium size agricultural machinery and equipment for value addition in agricultural products, capacity building of Pakistani scientists and strengthening of Pakistan’s research and development institutes.
