Importers in the past three weeks have purchased about 102,000 tonnes of sunflower meal to be sourced from Ukraine and Argentina, European traders said on Friday. Shipments are for up until the end of May.
Purchases were made because of poor sunflower and rapeseed crops in Pakistan last season, they said. The last purchase was made on Thursday, they said.
Around 40,000 tonnes from Argentina was bought at around $215 to $218 per tonne c&f Karachi. Some 62,000 tonnes from Ukraine was bought at around $225 a tonne c&f, they said.
The purchases involved 36 percent protein sunmeal. “This looks like being sufficient to meet the needs of the local industry until the new sunflower seed crop arrives this year,” one trader said. “This year”s sunseed crop in Pakistan is expected to be better than last season.”
