LAHORE: Punjab government is contemplating to equip around 600,000 small farmers with android mobiles under the Kissan Package with the objective of keeping them aware of weather updates and agriculture department’s plans and policies.
The government is likely to announce the disbursement of the mobile phones to the farmers in the upcoming budget.
The android mobiles will help farmers keep in track of utility and rates of agriculture inputs including seeds and fertilisers.
The mobiles will have apps which will update the farmers on latest agriculture technologies and incentives being announced by the Punjab government for farmers.
Currently, a policy in this regard is being drafted by the government which states that farmers having a maximum of 12.5 acres of land will be eligible to get mobile phones. The government has earmarked Rs 50 billion for Kissan package which will also include the android mobile phones.
Punjab Chief Secretary Captain (R) Zahid Saeed told a private TV channel that they are negotiating with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for loans. In addition to this, they also engaged a number of local banks including Punjab Bank for providing interest free loans to small farmers.
He claimed that Punjab government would pay the interest against loans being given to the farmers by the banks.
