Vice president of Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Major Muhammad Tariq Khan (retd) has called upon the government to take effective measures for increasing export of mangoes in order to earn substantial foreign exchange for the country.
He expressed his concern on the increase in tariff by Emirate airlines for mango transportation. He asked the management of Emirates to review its decision to increase tariff by Rs 65 per kg consequently tariff has increased to Rs180/kg which is not affordable for the exporters, After reduced exports during the last three years, some growers and exporters are optimistic to achieve export target of one lakh ton mangoes this year.
Tariq Khan, while talking to media men, called for effective communication among growers, exporters and the government, adding that only 64,000 tonnes mangoes were exported in 2015 against the 1,20,000 tonnes export in 2013. He said this was the “lowest export” in last five years. He explained that climatic hazards also had a major role as there was some 40 percent decline in domestic production.
