Pakistan approves 100000 tonnes of wheat for Iran to pay for power

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has authorised the export of 100,000 tonnes of wheat to Iran in trade not jeopardised by Western sanctions, to settle dues for electricity supplied to the country’s energy-starved border areas, the Commerce Ministry said on Friday. The shipment of 100,000 tonnes was to have been delivered to Iran in mid-February but was delayed by preparations for Pakistan’s May 11 election. “The wheat is being given to Iran against the outstanding payment of $53 million for electricity supplied to [...]

Wheat demand likely to be 29.06 million tons by 2015 May 20, 2013 6:31 am

Wheat demand likely to be 29.06 million tons by 2015

Pakistan would have to feed more than 200 million people in 2015 and expected wheat demand at that time would be 29.06 million tons. It could never be fulfilled without making tangible governing interventions of ensuring timely provision of irrigating water, seeds, fertilisers and other valuable inputs and later procuring as much as produces by the government that would certainly bridge the need-supply gap and prosper the rural economics. This was stated by Professor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, Vice Chancellor [...]

Sindh wheat procurement target of 1.3m tonnes

KARACHI: Flour rates have re-surged by Rs 4 to Rs 5 per kilogramme (kg) in the wholesale and retail markets of Karachi during the last 10 days in the wake of imposition of Section 144 by the Sindh Food Department for realisation of 1.3 million tonnes wheat procurement goal. Under the Section 144, inter-district wheat movement is banned by the provincial food department and it remains in place until it accomplishes the desired wheat procurement target as the goal for [...]

Sindh likely to miss wheat procurement target May 15, 2013 5:45 am

Sindh likely to miss wheat procurement target

The Sindh government is likely to miss its wheat procurement target mainly because of higher commodity prices in the domestic market. Sources told Business Recorder on Tuesday that the federal government had set a wheat support price of Rs 1,200 per mound for the current crop season. The new support price was some Rs 150 per maund higher than the previous support price, which was Rs 1,050 per maund. However, massive buying by hoarders and market movers has resulted in [...]

Pests: 10-15% of wheat yield lost during storage

LAHORE:  Agriculture experts have said that each year almost 10 to 15% of stored wheat is harmed by insects in godowns, and advised utmost care to avoid losses. Agricultural experts said on Tuesday that increases in moisture levels in the weather creates favourable breeding conditions for insects which attack the stored wheat. “Insect attack reduces the quality of wheat along with its nutritional value”, they added. Experts asked the farmers to store their wheat in metal silos. The silos should [...]

Wheat grain prices reach Rs 3,200 per 100-kg bag

The prices of wheat grain continue to move upward and reached Rs 3,200 per 100-kilograms bag in the domestic market due to buying by the market movers and hoarders. Market sources told Business Recorder on Wednesday that despite inter district ban on the movement of wheat by Sindh government to complete its procurement, the prices of the commodity are increasing for last three weeks. Wheat harvesting in Sindh has already begun and presently the government is engaged in procuring 1.3 [...]

AS optimism grows for a ‘bumper wheat crop’ in Punjab, farmers’ fears grow alongside for possible price fluctuations April 29, 2013 5:42 am

AS optimism grows for a ‘bumper wheat crop’ in Punjab, farmers’ fears grow alongside for possible price fluctuations

Till last week, Punjab was expecting around 18 million tonnes yield. Lately, its estimate has risen to 18.64 million tonnes, with a record average of 30.89 maunds per acre. Even that tally might see some upwards revision when harvesting and thrashing — delayed by two weeks due to weather variables (rains and temperature) — gains momentum. The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) was first to indicate the crop size, which now seems to have become a reality. Basing [...]

Pakistan Agri Forum Chairman Dr Muhammad Ibrahim Mughal expressed these views while talking to APP Sunday. Mughal said that according to reports received from district presidents of the forum, the storm and rains had affected wheat, chaff, and cotton severely. He said that the cotton seed which [...]

Violating free market principle: provinces being provided Rs 244 billion for wheat procurement

Federal government is providing Rs 244 billion to the provinces for procurement of wheat despite the fact that they have not retired the Rs 150 billion liability of commodity finance for the last fiscal year. Sources on the condition of anonymity said that the donors on several occasions expressed concerns over the government”s intervention in commodity operation because this mechanism is against the principle of free market. Official documents available with Business Recorder reveal that liability on June 30, 2013 [...]

Wheat Exports From Australia Seen Increasing 13%, CBH Says

Wheat shipments from Australia, the world’s third-biggest exporter this year, will probably advance 13 percent in 2013-2014 as higher profits encourage farmers to boost planting, CBH Group said. Sales may rise to as high as 18 million metric tons in the year beginning November from 16 million tons this year, said Tom Puddy, head of marketing at the country’s largest grain handler, which ships about 6 million tons of wheat a year. Production will expand to 24 million tons from [...]
