Steep fall in Basmati exports

Exports of Basmati rice are falling as production is down, local consumption is up and prices are higher than last year. Pakistan has exported 3.025 million tons of rice: 0.725 million tons Basmati and 2.3 million Irri-6 and other varieties. Pakistan to lead global rice exports in 2010: FAO

Pakistan is expected to lead increases in global rice exports in 2010. A report entitled, “Rice Market Monitor” published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, has predicted that exports of rice from Pakistan will rise to 3.8 million tons this year, as compared to just 2.8 million tons in 2008.
