Steep fall in Basmati exports January 14, 2013 8:38 am

Steep fall in Basmati exports

Exports of Basmati rice are falling as production is down, local consumption is up and prices are higher than last year. All this is happening at a time when competition with India has become tougher and its exporters have captured  large parts of Pakistan’s traditional markets. According to the Chairman of Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) Mr Jawed Ali Ghori, exports of Basmati fell more than fifty per cent in July-December 2012 to about 240,000 tonnes from 507,000 tonnes [...]

Global market: Pakistani basmati may slip down the pecking order

By Imran Rana The province produced 2.6 million tons of basmati rice in 2009-10, which dropped to 1.88 million tons in fiscal 2012. FAISALABAD: The entry of India, the world’s largest grower of rice, and lack of research has threatened Pakistan’s basmati rice export. Rice exports crossed $2 billion but remained below the target of $3 billion in fiscal 2012, said Taufiq Ahmad Khan former Vice Chairman Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan while talking to The Express Tribune. India has [...]

Support price for rice: Why many growers prefer to sell for less November 28, 2011 8:21 am

Support price for rice: Why many growers prefer to sell for less

By Ali Salman Like some other sectors in our economy, agriculture too is distorted by input subsidies and support prices. The government’s interference, on pretext of powerful lobbies, reigns supreme and open market operations are absent. In this article I will discuss implications of support price for the rice crop which is currently being harvested. Instead of utilising macro-economic data let’s take a look at a true story of a typical small grower in Punjab. Like every year, the populist [...]

Agriculture scientist claims to have developed world’s highest rice yield variety

By Muhammad Sadaqat A Hazara-based agriculture scientist claims to have developed the world’s highest rice yield variety. This specific rice plant’s leaves would remain green even after the maturity of grains due to prolonged photosynthetic activity and therefore they could also be used as fodder. Dr Fida Muhammad Abbasi, a professor of Genetics at Hazara University, told The Express Tribune on Thursday, that the existing varieties do not produce more than five tons per hectare, however the new variety would [...]

Sources told Business Recorder on Wednesday that during the current fiscal year, a bumper rice crop is expected.”We are expecting 10 million tons rice production, of which 3.5 million tons would be used for domestic consumption while rest of it would be exported, which may add up [...]

Rice May Slump, Easing Global Food Inflation

Rice, which has beaten corn and soybeans in the past year, may drop as India restarts non- basmati exports after lifting a ban, buyers including Indonesia purchase less than expected and global harvests gain to a record. The Indian shipments will have a bearish impact and futures may average $16 per 100 pounds in Chicago in the fourth quarter, according to Abah Ofon, an analyst at Standard Chartered Plc. That compares with $16.988 so far this quarter. Prices may fall [...]

Rice Planting in Fukushima May Be Abandoned Amid Soil Tainted by Radiation

By Aya Takada Farmers in Fukushima prefecture, Japan’s fourth-biggest rice producer, may not plant the grain this year after tainted soil was discovered near a crippled nuclear plant leaking radiation. “Farmers cannot grow anything without assurance from the government that their paddies are safe for food production,” Takuo Ichiya, agricultural production manager at the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, Japan’s largest farmers group, said today in an interview. “Concerns about radioactive contamination may hinder planting not only in Fukushima but [...]
