Corn Drop Seen as U.S. Sows Most Since 1936

From South Dakota to Ohio, farmers are preparing to plant the most corn in almost eight decades after drought ruined record U.S. harvests predicted by the government. “Farmers are looking for every acre possible to plant this year,” said Bill Bayliss, 67, who is expanding acreage by 10 percent on land he farms in West Mansfield, Ohio, where drought conditions have disappeared. “The price is attractive, and we have seen an improvement in soil moisture.” Corn acreage in the U.S., [...]

Study on Monsanto GM corn concerns draws skepticism

Experts criticised the study over a number points including low standards of research. LONDON: In a study that has prompted sharp criticism from other experts, French scientists said on Wednesday that rats fed on Monsanto’s genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weedkiller suffered tumors and multiple organ damage. The French government asked the country’s health watchdog to investigate the findings further, although a number of scientists questioned the study’s basic methods and Monsanto said it felt confident its [...]

Russia-Sized Mistakes Driving Corn Prices to Limit: Commodities

By Whitney McFerron and Jeff Wilson The gap between traders’ estimates of U.S. corn reserves, the world’s second-biggest, and official figures have reached the size of Russia’s annual consumption, increasing price swings at a time of near-record food costs. Analysts and traders missed numbers reported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture by 225 million bushels (5.7 million tons) on average in the past seven quarters, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s twice as much as in the previous five [...]

GMO drought-tolerant corn over-promises: plant scientist

(Reuters) – Utilizing biotech “drought-tolerant” corn to boost global food production would be a less-effective tactic than planting conventional corn and improving agronomic practices, a veteran plant scientist said on Tuesday. “The technology has gotten a tremendous amount of attention. We think undue attention,” said Doug Gurian-Sherman, a plant pathologist and senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, in an interview at the Reuters Food and Agriculture Summit. “It is a modest benefit and a real benefit and a [...]

World Corn Supply Falls Less Than Forecast as Rain Aids South America Crop

Global corn stockpiles before this year’s Northern Hemisphere harvests will decline less than analysts expected after rain last month eased dry conditions in Brazil and Argentina, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. World inventories on Sept. 30 will fall 0.7 percent to 124.53 million metric tons from 125.35 million projected in February, the smallest in five years, the USDA said today in a report. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News expected 123.43 million, on average. Brazil’s crop was expected to be [...]

Farmers Plan Biggest Crops Since 1984

U.S. farmers will plant the most acres in a generation this year, led by the biggest corn crop since World War II, taking advantage of the highest agricultural prices in at least four decades. They will sow corn, soybeans and wheat on 226.9 million acres, the most since 1984, a Bloomberg survey of 36 farmers, bankers and analysts showed. The 2.5 percent gain means an expansion the size of New Jersey, as growers target fields left fallow last year and [...]
